Well, THAT was silly.

I can’t believe I haven’t done this before. On my hunter, I have pet-attack macro’ed to a whole host of things. On my mage, I am for the first time ever trying frost, and of course, for the last billion levels, I have had a pet. I have my trusty (always on, cause I have the glyph) water elemental. Silly me, has been casting frost bolt, then going over and selecting pet attack. And I’ve been thinking “There’s got to be a better way to do this.” Duh.

If you are a frost mage, macro your pet’s attack to your opening move … otherwise he/she will wait until you are attacked (on defensive) or until you tell it to (on passive). Unless you’re really very silly and have the elemental on aggressive. Sillier than me anyway. Macro it to anything you open with: frostbolt or blizzard. Saves a command AND gets a micro second or two more of pet dps.
